Sale FC complete season with majestic win

Curtain comes down on superb season

Sale headed into their final game of the 2022/2023 season looking for a bonus point win to ask one final question of Rams and Cambridge at the summit of National One.

The first half saw both sides playing attacking rugby and the dogs twice overturning deficits to lead narrowly at the break.

A try from Ryan Roach had Moseley in front as early as the third minute before Josh Brown scored his 21st try of a remarkable season. 7-5

The visitors re-took the lead with a penalty from fly half, Daniel Lewis and then stretched further ahead when scrum half, Freddie Painter, intercepted a pass on his own try line and raced the length of the field to score. 7-13

Sale bounced back in front before the break when Tom Curtis blasted through a gap and timed his pass perfectly for James Robins to run in under the posts. HT 14-13

Two tries in the first seven minutes of the second 40 through Tumy Onasanya and Jake Barron secured the bonus point, albeit Moseley winger, Jacob Cusick reduced the arrears shortly afterwards. 28-18

However, buoyed by a bumper and vociferous crown, the dogs went on to score three more tries in the last ten minutes, Stone Priestley-Nangle, Oli Longmore (on his final appearance) and Tom Walsh all crossing the whitewash.

Tom Curtis kicked 7 conversions from 7 attempts to complete a remarkable personal performance. FT 49-18

Ultimately, Rams bonus point win at Esher meant we missed out on the league title and promotion by just one point and, bewilderingly, if Cambridge beat Moseley next week, we could actually finish third.

Their will be some disappointment among the coaches and players that we fell short by such a fine margin. There shouldn’t be.

The team has had a truly spectacular campaign, winning 23 games out of the 26 played and entertaining crowds, that have grown throughout the season, on a week by week basis. This augers well for the future of both the team and the club.

Rest up coaches and players. You have been magnificent and the club is immensely proud of you. We do it all again in September!
