James played rugby at a School and then abandoned the sport to take up Rowing and Martial arts. A brief foray back in 2000 playing in place of someone else for an Army game rekindled his love for the sport. He has been involved with Sale FC as a coach for the past seven seasons. A brief appearance for a Sale FC invitational side against Stockport in 2016 marked the end (and he means it this time) of his rugby playing days.
