We sat down with last seasons top try scorer to ask him a few questions around his time at Sale after joining from Loughborough university. Tom had time with the England age groups and evolved into a place within the England 7s set up. It’s these performances that earned him his involvement and the same performances that has seen him consistently hit in the top 3 try scorers since coming to the club and 68 appearances for the club.
1. Tom, you’re a fan favorite here at Sale FC! What does it mean to you to have such strong support from the crowd every game?
TW: It’s a great feeling when you hear the crowd get behind the lads, especially after scoring a try. We all really appreciate the support, especially during the tough away days and dark winter months.
2.”Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a winger for Sale FC? Were there any significant moments or influences along the way?”
TW: I used to play a lot of wing at school but moved to 9 around u16s. I still played 9 when I first arrived at FC, but due to injuries had to cover the wing for my first game (Tote pulled me aside and I thought I was getting dropped again).-a funny store looking back really.I’d say all of the lads have really helped me fit in at FC on the wing, especially the senior gents like Tom Brady and Ferg Mulchrone. They’re great for being able to learn from.
3.“Outside of rugby, what are some of your hobbies or interests that fans might be surprised to learn about?”
TW:”I’m currently training to be an accountant. My other hobbies are reading and playing golf as much as I can; hopefully you can see my skills on show at the golf day? when is that again ???”
4.“What’s a typical pre-game routine or ritual for you? Do you have any superstitions or habits that you follow before hitting the pitch?”
TW:”I like to do the same individual warm up every game. For away days I like sitting in the same seat on the bus (next to bobbins(James Robins, opposite MB9(Matt Bradley and SPN4(Stone Priestley-Nangle))), it feels wrong otherwise.”
“You’ve had some incredible moments on the pitch. Can you share one of your favorite memories from playing with Sale FC and what made it so special?”
TW:”My favourite moment has to be my debut against Cambridge at home. Other than that we’ve had some great away wins along the years (DMP in my first year, Rams most recently). Cambridge was special to see how good Heywood road can be and feel the atmosphere in the sun. “
“Cheers Tom, we’ll let you get off now. Sure you’ve got something to do”
TW : “cheers guys. I don’t.”
