Ampthill 57 Sale FC 12

Amps Dominate Sale Outscoring The Visitors nine tries to two at Dillingham Park writes Warren Kay, Ampthill Senior Rugby Publicity Officer

After going behind to an early try Ampthill dominated the game scoring 9 tries and leaving several more on the park.

From the kick off Sale retained the ball well showing good structure to move the ball deep into Amps territory. A sweeping move through the hands from left to right saw a fine unconverted try scored in the right corner on 5 minutes by centre Moorhouse.

A’s took the game away from the visitors with 5 tries before half time. Wing Sam Baker scored a brace with two good finishes (8 minutes, 16) from open play. Scrum half Kevin Barrett sniped on 21 minutes from a red zone breakdown before Baker celebrated his hat trick on 25 minutes. Centre Ollie Morris to completed the scoring for the half after he was in support to receive the final pass in the 38th minute. Full back James Pritchard, playing the penultimate game of his illustrious 19 year career, converted all Baker’s tries leaving the score 31-5 at oranges.

The second half was more of the same with the home side adding 4 more tries through fly half Josh Sharp (47, 75), replacement hooker Syd Blackmore (51) and replacement scrum half Euan McKirdy (73). Pritchard adding the extras for all but Blackmore’s.

In between the 57th minute saw a fine try from Sale’s centre Dunn, converted by fly half Povey.

The hosts were in control in the tight and the loose while the defence held a concerted second half effort from the visitors whose heads never dropped.

Old Elthamians managed a bonus point win away at Bishop’s Stortford which forces the title fight to go down to the wire of the last round of fixtures. Ampthill need 1pt against Loughborough on April 27th to secure promotion to the Championship!

Head Coach Paul Turner comments “A pleasing performance, especially after the poor second half at Moseley the week before. We played some good football against a committed side but let a chance or two go begging. Our defence was good in the second half and both half backs had excellent games.”

England Deaf Rugby Double Header

This afternoon Sale FC Rugby will be hosting an England Deaf Rugby Double Header here at the CorpAcq Stadium.

England Deaf v Wales Deaf at Cardiff Arms Park

This afternoon Sale FC Rugby will play host to two top class Deaf Rugby fixtures between featuring both the England Men’s and Women’s sides here at the CorpAcq Stadium.

The first fixture of the afternoon will see Sale 1861 Women side take on England Deaf’s Women’s side in a friendly fixture kicking off at 1pm. Then at 4pm, England Deaf’s Men’s side will play their Welsh counterparts in an International Test Match for the Broadstreet Cup.

In their last encounter in January, England Deaf Men were beaten by their Welsh opponents at Cardiff Arms Park by 29-11, in what was a thrilling encounter.

We are sure that both of these fixtures will be as good, with the games being shown to a global audience thanks to the BBC Sport Online team and the camera work of Richard Jackson at Cheers Mate Productions.

Trafford Girls Rugby continues to grow

The Trafford Girls Rugby programme continues to go from strength to strength since it began just a month ago.

Invite to come and play for the Trafford Girls Rugby team.

Monday nights down at the new venue of Carrington HPC Training Centre have definitely been a lot popular with the Trafford Girls Rugby programme since it started just over a month ago.

Coach Andy Hughes has seen the number of girls attending the sessions grow week on week, with the wide range of ages being catered for in both of the ages brackets, these being U13’s and U15’s as this fledgling programme finds its feet.

Each week, the session start at 6.30pm and the invitation is open to any girls who fall into either of the age categories within the Trafford Schools catchment area. Therefore, if you would like to come along please contact Andy Hughes either via email Andy@Salefc.com or 0161 905 2006.

Sale FC 31 Plymouth Albion 22

Sale FC Rugby almost certainly seal their place in National League One with a solid five point display against their Devonian visitors.

Sale FC secured their place in National League One for a second season with a hard-fought win over Plymouth Albion at the CorpAcq Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams found difficulty in establishing a rhythm in the opening minutes, Sale scoring first on 12 minutes following a break by winger Paolo Odogwu whose powerful run was halted by a somewhat cynical high tackle by Plymouth full back Dan Powell.

The resulting penalty was skillfully dispatched into touch close to the corner flag by fly half Emiliano Calle Rivas and from the resulting line out, Sale drove to the line, Stone Priestley – Nangle scoring the opening try.

Within 2 minutes Plymouth full back Dan Powell found space to run clear and level the scores. Sale quickly re-established a slender lead with a Calle Rivas penalty on 15 minutes.

The two sides effectively cancelled each other out during the next period of play until Plymouth gained the advantage following a sustained attack which culminated in the unlikely figure of prop forward James Kenny appearing in the back line and finding a large enough gap in the Sale defence to slip through and score.

The try was converted by fly half Connor Eastgate.

Having edged ahead, the visitors were unable to retain the lead for long as Sale winger Odogwu created space for himself to break clear and sprint 70 metres to score under the posts. Calle Rivas added the extra points.

With just one minute to play before half time, Plymouth regained the lead with a try by Eastgate to give the away team a slender 17 points to 15 lead going into the second half.

A Calle Rivas penalty restored Sales lead which was extended when Robbie Povey scored with a penetrating break from 25 metres.

What might have been a pivotal moment came minutes later when Sale prop Dan Birchall was shown a red card having been adjudged to have stamped on an opponent.

The incident seemed to galvanise the home side who defended with tremendous spirit and then broke to within 5 metres of the Plymouth line.

Sale captain Andy Hughes disrupted the away team’s lineout throw, hooker Neil Briggs on hand to scoop up the ball and score giving Sale’s 14 men an 11-point cushion.

Plymouth substitute Frank Kelly reduced the deficit with a try after some slick handling by Plymouth. As the match entered the closing 10 minutes, numerical parity was established as Plymouth replacement Will Norton was shown a yellow card.

Povey was successful with his penalty kick leaving Plymouth with a 9-point gap to close.

Sale stuck manfully to their task showing tremendous spirit to close out the game and securing a bonus point win to guarantee League One rugby next season.

Sale FC Rugby v Plymouth Albion

Here is Saturday’s team announcement for the National One game against Plymouth Albion.

This Saturday Sale FC Rugby play against National League One rivals Plymouth Albion in the penultimate home game of the season. With everything still to play for in terms of relegation, Sale are looking to bounce back after defeat by bottom side Esher Rugby last weekend.

From the team last weekend there are a number of changes to the side that faced Esher, including the return of Neil Briggs after his playing ban to the Hooker role. There is also a return to the starting line up for Emiliano Calle Rivas and Ed O’Keeffe to the Fly Half and Wing positions respectively.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

April is Bowel Cancer awareness month, and here at Sale FC Rugby we are proud to support this programme.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – Here are some facts that you need to be aware of.

Sale FC Rugby are proud to announce that they will be supporting the Bowel Cancer Awareness campaign this April. Bowel Cancer sadly takes the lives of 42,000 people each year, and in terms of where it ranks within the forms of the most common cancers, it is the fourth most prominent in the UK ahead of Skin Cancer (Melanomas).

Furthermore, it is perceived that only older adults are more likely to get Bowel Cancer. Currently, the statistics show that every 9 out of 10 (94%) of adults aged over 50, and nearly six in every ten cases (59%) aged over 50 are diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

However, it must be added that it isn’t just specific to these age groups and is more widely spread in terms of the demographic split. More alarmingly, is the fact that 268,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with this type of cancer, meaning that 1 in every 15 men and 1 in every 18 women will be diagnosed throughout their lifetime.

How then can you help yourself and others to ensure that you don’t ever suffer this awful cancer?

Above we have a series of simple checks and procedures that people (both men and women) can follow to check for the symptoms that are most common with this type of cancer.

What we must add here is that if you feel or have ANY of these symptoms please make an appointment with your doctor to get checked over by a health care professional.

Here at Sale FC Rugby, we feel it is important to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer as it affects so many lives each year, and also the fact that it really isn’t age discriminatory when it comes to who can actually be directly affected by it.

Upon speaking about our involvement with the Bowel Cancer Awareness campaign for the month of April, General Manager Dave Hulme said “At Sale FC Rugby we are always conscious of the need to raise awareness of campaigns like the Bowel Cancer one, as we have a responsibility within the local and wider communities to ensure that we as a club are able to highlight the importance of getting checked out if you feel or experience any of the common symptoms, that are associated with Bowel Cancer. “

At the game this Saturday (against Plymouth Albion) we will be joined by members of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust who will be raising awareness themselves about Bowel Cancer.
