Matt:

“A disappointing result in the end, we created enough opportunities to get something from the game. There was a lot of positives in the performance, but, against a quality side if you make errors they take advantage, and that’s what they did. We can definitely take confidence from the performance going in to this week- certainly in terms of attitude and intensity. If we can cut out the errors we will be in with a shot.

But, going down to London is never easy, especially against a good side. But I think it is important for us to learn from last week and build on the positives we did show. Last season the performance wasn’t great at Blackheath, so we are hoping we can rectify that, if we can put an 80minute performance together we can be in with a shout of picking an important away win.

Back to back London trips isn’t ideal, but I think we can be excited by the challenge. We take every game as it comes, so we aren’t thinking too much about it, we just have to perform like we know we can”.

Matt, who finished off THAT scorching team try against Canterbury has been building each week, putting in some quality shifts recently. His partnership remains with Chris Johnson at 10 as they eagerly look ahead.

On paper, we look impressive. At least in terms of points, with The Blue and Whites scoring 472 points- a top 5/6 contention, with a decent point difference of 43. Whilst Blackheath, although 5th, have a point difference of 17- scoring less than Sale, yet have the ability to see out these away games with an impressive away form. Notably, on their last visit to Heywood Rd they conceded, only one of the 4 losses occurred.

Jonathan Keep said,

“Its been a tough start to 2020 for the squad in having three away trips out of our four fixtures in January. Down in London again Old Elthamians, Rosslyn Park and now Blackheath. On each occasion so far we have performed well against quality opposition and played some good rugby. However, we have only come away with one point out of the fixture down at OE’s earlier this month, so we are looking to improve on this tomorrow.

As always, we are expecting it to be a tight fixture and we have equipped ourselves well during the week to give ourselves the best possible chance to come away with the win. The squad continue to work hard week on week to improve on their last performance. Everyone is looking forward to the fixture.”

The squad features minimal change with only a few rotations. Jonty Rawcliffe swaps wings as Jack Moorhouse pushes out to 14 from previously 13. As Johnny Leota, the birthday man, comes in at 13 after some weeks away as he is joined by Patrick Ah Van at 12- a lethal combo in the centre, looking to force some gaps. Emiliano Calle Rivas continues his start at fullback as Fergus Mulchrone and Tom Brady are still sidelined with injury, he impresses in back-to-back weeks offering some explosive speed in the backline.

The forwards remain unchanged as they continue to challenge opposition packs with their physicality. Jake Pope, Juan Pablo Rivas, Dan Matthews and Stone Priestley-Nangle all eager to provide some additional force off the bench.

Players to watch: Matt Bradley, Stone-Priestley Nangle and Andrew Hughes (FC)

Henry Staff from Blackheath picked up Man of The Match in their previous fixture, notably a man to watch

The London side went over the line six times as they bounced back from losing to Sale in dominant style. And Richmond’s win over Rams means Park climb up to second as the title battle gets even closer.

Park leapt out the blocks as a swift move from the line-out saw Neville Edwards run clean through on the left wing after two minutes. And the home side had a second eight minutes later, Joe Munro spinning through the defence to bound under the posts.

Holland was on hand both times to add the extras, giving the crowds at the Rock great optimism of a heavy win. This was hampered on 18 minutes, though, as Ollie Longmore finished off his own maul to put Sale on the board.

But Park did not let it haunt them, continuing to put pressure on that saw Ali Wade run clear six minutes later.

Sale gave Kieran Power’s men something to think about on 27 minutes as Jonty Rawcliffe finished off a move on the left wing.

The visitors held onto possession until half time but could not break through again. And Park punished them 10 minutes after the restart, Henry Robinson breaking through before Benji Marfo burst through a gap in the defence.

With a roar from the crowd, Jonathan Mills’ pack caused a Sale error from their scrum and Holland leapt onto the loose ball. Starting on his own five-metre line, the No.10 ate up the turf as he added Park’s fifth try.

Sale jarred the home side’s course to victory when captain Andrew Hughes drove through on the left wing 11 minutes later. But Edwards finished the game as he started it, with a score in the corner for the final action of the game to send Park second.

A vital game for The Dogs as they take on quality outfit Rosslyn Park. Fighting on either spectrum of the table- We push for a top 5 whilst Park look up to secure a top spot.

Last week began a regeneration of form as The Dogs seemed to enjoy their run out against Canterbury. An impressive team try finished off by Matt Bradley made NCA’s ‘Try of the week’ as well as racking up 40k views on England Rugby’s Twitter!

Great to see the lads appreciated for their efforts- a brilliant try!

A dominant display last weekend will certainly help with squad morale heading into a huge game against 3rd-placed Rosslyn Park. The dogs will need to be firing again this week to produce some more quality.

Tote Howcroft, Head Coach- gave his thoughts ahead of the game:

“Saturday sees another journey down the M6 to the capital, where we face a talented and very well coached Rosslyn Park team- who sit only 3 points off the top of the table.

We go there on the back of a good 5 point win against Canterbury, but if we are honest, last Saturday was a long way off a complete 80-minute-performance.

We showed some glimpses of real quality in the first half, which included Matt Bradley’s NCA try of the week, a fantastic team try. However, we will need to go up a few gears this Saturday if we are to challenge a team with title ambitions- looking to bounce back from a London Derby defeat at Blackheath last week.

We look forward to the challenge of ‘The Rock’ this week with the hope of avenging our home defeat back in October.”

6 changes have been made to the squad with this week. The forwards however, remain unchanged with Juan Pablo Rivas returning back to the squad after an injury spell. He’s joined by Dan Matthews, John Blanchard Jr and Stone Priestley-Nangle all eager to continue their form off the bench to make a difference to an important game.

The Backs feature few changes, with positions mainly changing. Patrick Ah Van comes off his favoured left wing into the Centres alongside Jack Moorhouse who starts at 13 this week. Jonty Rawcliffe remains on the right wing with Anthony ‘Bingo’ Bingham returning to the left. Emiliano Calle Rivas starts this week at fullback after impressing off the bench against Canterbury. Chris Owen returns to the bench hoping to also make an impact.

Tom Brady and Fergus Mulchrone remain sidelined with injuries whilst James Williams starts at 12 again for the Sharks this weekend against Glasgow Warriors. We wish him all the best.

1st team Captain, Andy Hughes has said:

“We are expecting a tough game when we travel down to London this weekend.

Rosslyn Park are a class outfit and are sitting 3rd in the table. They were beaten by Blackheath last week so we are expecting reaction from them as they fight for promotion. But, we have worked hard in training all this week in order to meet this challenge.

We go in with no pressure on us and if we perform well then we back ourselves to get a result.”

Team Announcement

A few changes from last weeks win against Old Elthamians. Tom Brady stays at home awaiting the birth of his first child, he’s replaced by the returning Anthony Bingham who’s been working in Japan with his company Jimbag. James Williams is away, so there’s a back line reshuffle with Emi Calle Rivas starting. England under 18 player Raffie Quirke makes his first appearance in a Sale FC shirt starting on the bench.

CANTERBURY 7 SALE 27. Spurred on by their first win of the season last week, Sale made the long trip to a sunny but windy Canterbury. Despite Sale scoring the only try of the first half, the home side were certainly the better team but Sale grabbed the initiative with two tries in the first ten minutes of the second half and ended up convincing winners. The opening score came on the fifteenth minute mark following a well rehearsed catch and drive from Sale allowing flanker Teddy Leatherbarrow to dive over. The gusty conditions made any kick difficult and Chris Johnson’s attempted conversion drifted wide. Canterbury dominated the remainder of the first half but, lacked the ability to turn good positions into points. All credit to dogs as they punished early mistakes by the home side to extend their lead within three minutes of the restart. Canterbury spilled the ball in midfield and Sale quickly moved the ball out wide with Fergus Mulchrone making space for Paddy Ah Van to score in the corner. Chris Johnson’s attempted conversation again became a victim of the swirling condition. Sale then moved fifteen points clear through a lovely piece of individual skill. There seemed no danger as Best cleared the home side lines but his kick was fielded on the half way line by Jonty Rawcliffe who stepped to his left, fooled the defence and opened the path for a Jeremy To’a try. The momentum was now all with the away side and they pressed it home with a fourth, bonus point score. Canterbury were penalised for a high tackle and following a kick to the corner. Hooker Ollie Longmore made no mistake from a powerful catch and drive. Johnson’s kick was again shy of the target. The home side finally breached the watertight Sale defence with a patient series of forward pick and drives and a Charlie Connolly try which was converted by Best. Hopes of a late recovery for the home side however never looked like materialising and Sale emphasised their dominance when scrum half Raffie Quirke found the blind side of a scrum unguarded to run in a debut try which left Chris Johnson the easiest of his conversion kicks.
