Sale’s promotion push ends with defeat at Blackheath

3rd versus 4th at the Utilita with Blackheath and Sale FC looking for that vital win to keep them in the mix for possible promotion to the Champ.

The early stages of the game saw the Dogs with plenty of territory and that paid dividends in the 7th minute when Huw Davies crashed over the line after several phases from the forwards; James Robins added the extras. 0-7

The hosts bounced back almost immediately with a try from centre, Luke Pollock, and then surged into the lead with further unconverted scores from Tom Hughes and hooker, Billy Harding, who grabbed his record-breaking 43rd try of the season. 15-7

More powerful work from the Sale forwards enabled Davies to stretch over for his brace before Pollock added his second before the break, blasting in from halfway. HT 20-12

Disaster struck for the Dogs at the start of the second half as the ball went loose from kick off allowing Club’s Ed Scragg to pick up and stroll in. 25-12

Sale responded with another forward-orientated try through Nathan Langdon, converted by James Robins, to narrow the gap to 6 points but then conceded quickly again as Finley O’Sullivan grabbed Blackheath’s sixth try. 30-19

The Dogs lost Osian Roberts to a yellow card for head contact in the 57th minute and the hosts took full advantage as full-back, Tom Emery, carved through the defence to dot down under the posts with Sam Morley converting. 37-19

Despite their best endeavours, neither side could add to their score and the home side comfortably saw out the game to keep their hopes alive and end Sale’s play-off dream. FT 37-19
