Sale take first win as they power past Rams
The Dogs took on unbeaten Rams looking for their first win of the season in the newly-named Morson Stadium.
The blue and whites showed plenty of attacking intent from the off and opened the scoring in the 12th minute when a strong catch and drive from a 5m lineout saw hooker, Nathan Langdon, over the line; Joe Green added a fine conversion from the touchline. 7-0
The visitors responded in similar fashion almost immediately through Benjamin Atkins, only for Sale to score their second as good work from Jon O’Donnell led to Evan Mintern crashing over the whitewash; Green was on target again. 14-5
As the half wore on, conditions became increasingly greasy in the constant rain but the visitors reduced the deficit right on half-time as they were awarded a penalty try after constant pressure; Sale’s Fergus Mulchrone shown a yellow card in the process. HT 14-12
Despite being a man short, Sale attacked from the off in the second 40 and soon stretched their lead as centre, Toby Wilson, galloped through with Green converting. 21-12
The Dogs managed the period with 14 players well, keeping the Rams distant from their line and, with parity restored, they scored their bonus point try as another strong maul took replacement hooker, Alfie Longstaff, over; Green continued his perfect afternoon with the boot. 28-12
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Green added a 40m penalty to put Sale out of sight, but the visitors continued to battle and scored their third try through Morgan Macrae with the last play of the game. FT-31-17
Rams will be disappointed to return to Berkshire with nothing to show for their efforts but, for the Dogs, it was a welcome return to form.
