Lights go out on Christmas cracker between Sale FC and Moseley

7th placed Birmingham Moseley headed to Heywood Road to take on a Sale side looking for their first win in five in National One.

If the hosts were looking for a fast start, their hopes were dashed in the 3rd minute when, following a perfect 50-22 from fly-half, Tommy Taylor, the away side took the lead through Sam Pointon. 0-5

It didn’t take long for the Dogs to respond, however, as they kept the ball alive down the right wing before a timely pass saw scrum-half, Sean Street, scamper in. Home debutant, Ollie Davies added the extras. 7-5

Minutes later, a loose pass on halfway saw Birmingham winger, Freddie Painter, collect the ball and sprint his way to score under the posts; Taylor converted. 7-12

Sale reduced the arrears in the 15th minute when Davies kicked a simple penalty from 15m and two further kicks from the same player saw the Dogs in front. 16-12

Back came the visitors with a penalty of their own from Taylor, before retaking the lead with a fine try through scrum-half, Thomas Miles, after a strong break from centre, Ollie Allsop. 16-22

It looked as though Sale would be in arrears at the break, but Mark Dixon had other ideas as he was released to score after a superb backs more; Davies added another brilliant conversion. HT 23-22

Moseley started the second 40 like wildfire and only a knock-on prevented them from scoring in the early exchanges but a penalty from Taylor soon had them ahead again. 23-25

The game continued to be thrilling to watch as both sides threw caution to the wind, but it was Sale on the scoresheet again in the 57th minute as Josh Brown (as he so often does) benefitting from a strong catch and drive; Davies continued his brilliant afternoon from the tee. 30-25

Regrettably, with the game in the balance, a power surge saw the floodlights fail and, despite their best endeavours, the club were unable to solve the problem.

With the game having gone beyond 65 minutes, it is thought that the result will stand but we await confirmation from the powers that be.
