Ben Carlile to Depart Sale FC After Three Seasons
Sale FC will say farewell to Ben Carlile at the end of the season, as he returns home to Yorkshire to join Hull Ionians, bringing to a close a three-year spell at the club.
Since arriving initially on loan from Sale Sharks before making the move permanent, Carlile has gone on to make over 70 appearances in a Sale FC shirt, becoming a consistent and valued member of the squad both on and off the field.
During his time at the club, Carlile has been part of a group that has grown together over several seasons — building strong connections within the squad and contributing to the culture that defines Sale FC.
Reflecting on his time at Heywood Road, Carlile pointed to personal recognition as a standout moment.
“Winning Player of the Season for 24/25 is something I’m really proud of,” he said.
Alongside individual accolades, it is the shared moments that have left a lasting impression. When asked about his favourite memory, Carlile didn’t hesitate.
“Ferg’s winning try against Rosslyn Park at Heywood Road,” he recalled. “That was a special day.”
For Carlile, though, the club has always been about more than just what happens on the pitch.
“I’ll miss the people that make this club special,” he said.
“The people who give up their free time to make the club what it is, and of course the playing group. A lot of us have been together for a few seasons now, through thick and thin.”
Behind the scenes, Carlile was also keen to highlight the support he received off the field.
“Tony Howcroft has had a big impact on me, especially for giving me a job,” he added — a reflection of the close-knit and supportive environment that exists within the club.
Now, the decision to move on comes down to family.
“I’m moving back to Yorkshire to be closer to family,” Carlile explained. “It feels like the right time.”
As he prepares for his next chapter with Hull Ionians, Carlile leaves with a simple message for those who have supported him during his time at Sale.
“A massive thank you for making my time here so special.”
Carlile departs as more than just a player with over 70 appearances — but as someone who has been part of the fabric of the club during his time here.
Everyone at Sale FC thanks Ben for his contribution over the past three seasons and wishes him all the very best for the future.
