Match Report

With this game being the club’s Remembrance Day fixture, it was definitely a fitting tribute pre-match from the players and spectators alike marking the 100thAnniversary of the ending of The First World War.

As it played out the fixture was most definitely a great one as both sides worked hard in defence and attack throughout the match. That said, the result was the right outcome as the home side took their chances, even coming back from the usual 12 point deficit at home to register another five points in their National One campaign.

From the start of the fixture it was Sale who put the visitors Loughborough Students under pressure, as they seemed the more determined to take the game by the scruff of the neck. However, it was the visitors who took the lead early on when some neat interplay by the Loughborough backs from a lineout win saw their No.10 Mark Dixon score under the posts unattended, with Charlie Reed adding the extras it gave the students an early seven point lead.

Three minutes later, Sale were the next to score as flanker Adam Aigbokhae finished off a superb move to go over in the corner, to get the home side back in the game in these early stages. With Kieran Wilkinson missing the extras, the game was finely poised going into the second part of this first half.

Next to score were the home side thanks to Sale’s midfield general Jack Moorhouse, who found himself attached to the back of a rolling maul as Sale managed to push the students back over their own line to take the lead, Wilkinson added the extras giving the home side a slender lead.

From here, the students got their noses in front going into the half time break, as firstly Harry Priestner crashed over for a wonderful solo try, then Reed added a penalty to put the students ahead. With the momentum firmly now in the student’s favour, a further score was added by No.8 Thom Smith who powered his way through some poor Sale defence, giving the visitors a 12 point advantage.

Thankfully, the home side managed to score just before the break through No.8 Ryan Parkinson, with Wilkinson adding the extras the deficit was now just five points.

After the break, there was a real momentum shift going the way of the home team, as replacement Tom Ailes scored to put the home side back in front on 50 minutes. This was then added too some 10 minutes later, as Matt Bradley danced his way past the Students defence to go over in the corner.

The home side now had the lead, and the game was once again finely poised in preparation for the grandstand finish to the delight of the crowd. With 73 minutes on the clock, it was Sale who scored once again through Jack Moorhouse, after a great lineout was won by the home side leading to an attack finished by the club’s all time leading scorer. Wilkinson kicked the extras giving Sale an unassailable 14 point lead going into the final minutes.

It was the visitors, who rounded off the afternoon with a couple of bonus points as Centre, Priestner scored under the posts leaving Reed to add the extras. The game here at the CorpAcq Stadium ended Sale 38 Loughborough Students 31.
