Sandbach v Under 14

Cheshire Shield Semi Final

A truly vile day in Sandbach and Sale U14’s are playing Sandbach U14’s in the semi-final of the Cheshire Shield. A game that due to the inclement weather may well have not taken place had the game not kicked off at 10.30

Sandbach kick off and are immediately on the attack but great work by the forwards earn Sale a scrum and they manage to clear their lines to the halfway line.

From the lineout on halfway Sale get a turnover and push Sandbach into their own half but cannot turn this attack into points. From a scrum in their own half Sandbach launch an attack deep into the Sale half and are awarded a penalty for offside from which Sandbach score the first try of the day in the 12th minute. The conversion is good to make the score

Sandbach 7    Sale 0

Not disheartened by going behind Sale are back on the attack from the kick off and push Sandbach back deep into their own half. As the half ticks towards a conclusion Sale are still on the attack and after some great forward phases Ben crashes over the line to score what Sale think is the equalising try but he was Ben was adjudged to have knocked on and a Sandbach are awarded a five metre scrum. Sandbach win the scrum and clear into touch bring the half to a close.

Sale kick off the second half with their heads high despite the score and push Sandbach back into their own half and some great play by the forwards and pressing from the backs gives Aidan the chance to burst through the defence and score the first Sale try in the 28th minute. This is then expertly converted by Matty.

Sandbach kick off and both teams trade scrums on the halfway line without gaining any ground until the ball is beautifully kicked by Matty deep into the Sandbach half which is taken into touch for a Sale line out 10 yards from the try line. From the lineout a perfectly worked training ground move allows Matty to break the line and score the second Sale in the 35th minute.

Sale are now in the ascendency and are starting to play some great rugby in testing conditions. Another great move from the back allows Rory C to go on the rampage into the opposition half to put Sale on the attack. Sandbach are now defending for their lives in the face of some great attacking rugby from Sale. After some strong and dominant phase play from the forwards Ben goes over to score Sale’s third try in the 47th minute.

A great rugby by the whole squad and it was fantastic to see the spirit and the pride we all know is in the team week in week out come to the fore once again. A truly great performance and all associated should be proud.

Even at half time and trailing by 7 points the heads were not down and scoring the try in the first few minutes of the second half gave the guys the platform to build a great second half.

Great performances once again throughout the whole team, Matty the kicking was exceptional again especially given the conditions, mighty Moh whose battering ram like runs from the ruck seemed to rock Sandbach back on their heels again and again, Ethan, Ben, Rory C, Billy and Matt whose tackling and work at the breakdown was incessant.

A fantastic day and result for all and a great advert for all the time and effort the coaches put in during training and the games and behind the scenes. As a parent and supporter I am sure I speak for all when I say thank you for all you do to make these games happen and all the time you put in. It is much appreciated.

A special mention for the Sandbach team for the spirit and sportsmanship they showed and to whole the club for making is so welcome

All in all a great day for the whole Sale family.

Onwards to the final!

Cheshire Plate Match

During mid-week training and before the match, the players were asked to improve on their performance from the prior week, and despite the scoreline all players improved their individual effort against a very strong Sandbach team.

Full credit to our hosts, who played irresistible rugby throughout and proved that good passing opens up defences more often, and more thoroughly than straight running.

The second half saw Sale rally, and some big hits from Ali Ashtar saw our confidence return, but despite coming close twice we were unable to cross the whitewash for that all important score.

The game was played in the right spirit throughout, and we wish Sandbach all the best in the latter stages of the competition.
