Mr Desmond Pastore, awarded an MBE for services to rugby from Queen Elizabeth II.
A
nonagenarian rugby player from Manchester has collected an MBE from the
Queen.
The
Queen told Desmond Pastore: "You are remarkable."
The
92-year-old, of Northenden, celebrated his last birthday by scoring a try
in a game at Eccles RUFC.
"The
Queen said `Are you still playing rugby?'. I said I was. She said `I don't
believe it'. I told her I played on my birthday in September and she said
`You are remarkable'. We did laugh about it."
Mr
Pastore, who was wearing his Sale XV rugby club tie, pledged to still be
playing in two years' time at the international Golden Oldies event in
Edinburgh in
2008.
Mr
Pastore's 75-year career included a spell as captain of the England
services side after the Second World War, before he returned to the North
West to re-join Sale.
