Tom Brady runs in a hat trick. The first(s) of his Sale FC campaign

The result of this fixture was determined well before Sale scored the bonus point try, after half an hour of play, with the visitors having had a total monopoly on possession and territory, it looked as if their power and pace would inflict Ionians’ heaviest defeat of this, or any other season.

Sale took ten minutes to break Ionians’ resistance; winger Brady finished a flowing move picking up his first of the season. The tally books came out as Brady recorded his second with a great set play to put the winger “like a London bus” in the corner.

Ah Van Fends

Almost a try for Teddy Leatherbarrow as he breaks through several would be tacklers but is adjudged to have knocked on as he reaches for the line. Unfortunate, but promising, as the score remains unchanged with Sale knocking on the door of the hosts. 27’ Andrew Hughes passionately charges down an attempted box kick as the ball drops over the try line as he somehow manages to touch it down. Conversion was unsuccessful.

30’ try denied! Mulchrone unfortunate this time, due to deliberate foul play ruling out another score. But, within the next phase Mulchrone finds himself at the back of a try-scoring rolling maul dotting down over the line. 33’ an again the forwards proving unstoppable as Ollie Longmore benefits from a strong rolling maul. At 0 -31 home supporters feared the worst. Eventually Ionians stemmed the flow and the hard-pressed forwards worked a rare scrap of possession into the hands of centre Minikin who was able to spirit his way to the line- 38’

Strong Carry- Ollie Longmore

Sale again had more of the ball in the second period, but it was more evenly contested than the first. Ewan Ashman the debutant comes on replacing Ollie Longmore. The only points came after the hosts had produced 30 minutes of stout defiance.

71’ Sale produced a passage of free-flowing rugby with Fergus Mulchrone throwing a wonderful long pass for the awaiting Tom Brady to complete a hat-trick with a showboating swallow dive over the line.
