Sale 2s went to vale of lune confident after much improved performances on last year against Fylde and a draw with Double winners Chester. It didn’t take long for that confidence to translate into points as a slick 8 9 14 move saw Chris Owen score in the corner. On ten minutes Rowan Barker went off with a suspected broken hand which was a blow. Sale soon found themselves 12-0 up with a highly controversial try as Ben Simmo went down the blind side, popped the ball to Dunne who appeared to knock on and picked back up and passed to Harry Stainton who finished beautifully from half way. The old adage play to the whistle was never more apt. Shortly after taking this lead captain Ben Simpson went off with a hamstring injury disrupting Sale’s rhythm.
Vale responded with 2 brilliant individual tries by their 15 to take a 14-12 lead. In truth the defence was poor but they were brilliant tries none the less. The game ebbed and flowed and Sale found themselves 21-24 up at half time.
Vale battled well but the 2nd half begin to tell, the brilliance of Kieran Dunne was evident throughout the game as he put in big hits and bamboozled the defence. The score quickly found its way to 36-21 and the game looked secured. However, Vale battled back and scored to make Sale nervous at 36-28. However, Kieran Dunne broke 3 tackles and powered under the post to put the game to bed at 43-28. Two more tries followed and Sale ended a 9 try romp 57-28 victors. Kieran Dunne MOM with his 4 try haul, Chris Owen Brace, Ollie longmore returning from a long layoff shoes a try, Harry Stainton and Tommy Newton rounded off the try scorers. Caldy is next for the boys on their campaign.
