Full Match Report

From the kick off Sale attacked and maintained control until a knock on by Sale hooker Taylor gave Old Elthamians (OE) an opportunity to relieve the pressure with a scrum.

Harassed by Matt Bradley, OE scrum half Claxon knocked on. From the scrum, Sale continued to apply pressure, driving at the OE defence.

Play halted when Jack Moorhouse knocked on, the referee, however, awarded a penalty to Sale for an OE offside. The penalty found touch inside the OE 22, Sale won the lineout, Kieron Wilkinson found Moorhouse who went for the line but was held up by OE.

The resulting 5 Metre scrum was re set after the Sale pack disrupted the OE scrum. Sale won the ball and went wide, Johnny Leota, holding off his man, passed one handed to Paulo Odogwu who powered over the line, leaving two OE defenders in his wake.

An excellent kick from the touchline by Wilkinson secured the extra 2 points with 7 minutes played.

With Sale on the front foot, Davies drove into the OE half. Following an exchange of kicks, OE ran the ball but were held by Sale, hooker Christian Taylor, broke clear of the ruck, and despite of two attempted tackles, went over, under the posts on 14 minutes.

Wilkinson converted.

A Sale scrum resulted in a free kick to OE who chose to re set. OE centre Moffat linked up with the OE forwards driving into Sale territory , a series of mauls lead to a penalty near the Sale line, Quickly taken, , OE fly half White went over in the 18thminute then converted.

Directly from the restart OE flanker Messum latched onto the ball, with space to run into, found winger Howard who sped clear touching down on 19 minutes. White missed the conversion from close to the touch line.

Following the kick-off, OE fly half White kicked into Sale territory, OE recovered possession and went on the attack, and the dangerous Howard was well tackled near the Sale 22. OE forwards controlled and drove towards the posts, sucking in the Sale defence before another penalty, was, awarded to OE.

Again, quickly taken, the ball went to second row Self who scored in the 25thminute. The try was unconverted. Score:-

OE were quickly into their stride and broke clear with winger Howard supported by White, attacking. The tackle by Rawcliffe prevented any immediate danger and a penalty was awarded against OE.

It was clear that Rawcliffe had suffered an injury in that tackle, the game was then delayed for some time whilst an ambulance came to the scene.

The match recommenced with substitute Chris Johnson finding touch with the penalty kick.

For 10 minutes, both teams looked to attack, OE having the better of the exchanges but Sale defence proving resilient, holding up the OE attack until conceding a penalty for offside on 36 minutes.

The kick was taken quickly, Barton scoring, converted by White.

Half Time

The second half began with an exchange of kicks ending with a Sale lineout on 42 minutes. Sale won the ball, but were unable to take control and were perhaps fortunate when an OE attempted interception was knocked on.

Substitute Neil Briggs injected pace and power into the attack, Sale kept OE on the defensive, good handling and direct running forcing OE errors. On 50 minutes , the pressure was rewarded when , following a solid scrum and quick pass by Matt Sturgess , winger Paulo Odogwu raced clear , beating his opposite number to score . Johnson converting .

Within minutes , Sale conceded a penalty on their scrum which OE kicked into the Sale 22m area. From the lineout OE constructed a solid maul ,OE hooker Morris broke clear scoring under the posts ,converted by White.

Immediately , Sale responded and on 57 minutes , Johnson’s pass to Aigbokhae saw him burst through defence to score. Johnson converted .

Sale continued to play positive rugby but Johnson knocked- on near his 5m line. From a solid scrum,OE centre  Alex Brown scored ,White converting .

Within 2 minutes Sale were on the attack, substitute John Blanchard Jr breaking from half-way ,Sale recycled the ball , Briggs found Odogwu who scored  his hat trick try on 69 minutes. Johnson converting.

With the match entering the closing 10 minutes OE fought to extend their slender lead but were contained by disciplined Sale defence. With 5 minutes left, Sale counter attacked , a lineout won deep in OE territory gave Sale another attacking platform ending with Moorhouse scoring in the corner on 76 minutes , superbly converted by Wilkinson.

Sale continued on the offensive in the closing minutes but with steady, controlled play, taking no risks to run out winners of an entertaining ,thrilling game of Rugby..
