Canterbury Match Review

Sale FC vs Canterbury

11th JAN 2020

A well-deserved victory for The Blue and Whites after a powerhouse display in the first 40.

A highly anticipated game, with vital points on the line for both sides. Sale look up towards the Top 5, whilst, Canterbury look to survive the Nat 1 relegation battle.

As expected, the teams came out from the changing rooms flying. Most notably Patrick Ah Van who puts a crunching tackle 2 minutes in to set the tone of the game.

Canterbury forcing themselves onto the front foot, with the retention of possession from two well-placed box kicks, putting them comfortably into the Sale half. But, some resilient FC defence leaves Canterbury without points as a line-out 15m out is not straight.

Jarad Williams makes a clean 70m break from the base of a scrum deep in the FC half- “It just opened up. I was hoping it wouldn’t really, it was one of those ones where you just want the tackle to come in as soon as it can” he says, “What? That run?” post-match with a big grin on his face reminiscent of an unexpected break.

14’ TRY!

Sale continue to build pressure on a stretched Canterbury as they defend strong deep in their half, after a remarkable break. Chris Johnson slides a clean pass to Fergus Mulchrone who dives over the whitewash for the first try of the match.

Canterbury look to rebuild after a good start, but the Sale defence remains stubborn as they smother everything that comes their way. An excellent rolling maul though leaves Sale scrambling as the visitors march into opposition half.

Nonetheless, a good turnover and attack allows The Dogs to return the favour with a rolling maul of their own, they continue to apply pressure as Canterbury lose another man to the bin- 30’

The visitors get us underway for the second 40.

Emiliano Calle Rivas collects the ball deep in his own half, returning with some quick feet, beating two as he sets up The Dogs on the attack. A rolling maul from the resulting penalty line-out falls short, gifting Canterbury opportunity to shape a counter of their own- building possession once more.

52’ TRY

The visitors reciprocate their gratitude of possession with a well worked try. A great break leaves the flyhalf free to dot down in the corner

58’ TRY!

Yet, with the restart allowing Sale to rebuild, they mount pressure deep into opposition half. Jake Pope becoming a prolific scorer as he extends The Dogs’ lead after a lineout maul forces their way over. A decent success rate for our Pope as he scores in successive weeks.

Rhys Davies leaves the field after another strong performance, replaced in the scrum by…Jack Moorhouse! New lessons certainly learnt
